The Department hosts its own Study Abroad program for undergraduates in Vienna, Austria: the Austria-Illinois Exchange Program. Our undergraduates live and study in Vienna for either a semester or a year, and earn University of Illinois credit toward their degrees. We have a full-time Resident Director (Professor Bruce Murray) and graduate student teaching assistants who work with our undergraduates to make their experience even more fruitful. Students from Vienna come to Illinois for their own experience of living and working in a foreign culture, and here they are welcomed by the entire Department as well as by the Study Abroad Program Manager (Professor Robert Jenkins). Please see the links at the left for additional information about these exciting and unique opportunities, as well as for information about the University's Study Abroad Office and the programs it offers.
We offer our graduate students several opportunities to conduct research and (on select programs) to teach at German and Austrian universities. Please see the links at the left for information about some of these enriching and important programs.
Graduate students also travel regularly to European archives and universities with the support of external (Fulbright, DAAD, etc.) and internal sources (School of Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics fellowships, departmental fellowships, Dissertation Completion fellowships, summer research support).
