Professor Bruce Murray

Professor Bruce Murray, AIEP DirectorProfessor Bruce Murray received his Ph.D. in German Literature from the University of Minnesota. He completed his Master's Degree at Middlebury College and B.A. in German and English at Luther College. As an undergraduate junior, he participated in the Institute of European Studies program in Freiburg. While a student at Middlebury he spent one year at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität in Mainz. With the help of a Fulbright Grant he completed his dissertation research at the Humboldt Universität and Freie Universität in Berlin. He also has spent a number of summers in Graz, working with the American Institute of Musical Studies.

Professor Murray's research interests include German film history, the literature and culture of the Weimar Republic, topics in contemporary German cultural studies, good governance, and climate change. He has published a book on film in the Weimar Republic and co-edited another on the historiography of German cinema and television. He also has published a variety of articles on the treatment of National Socialism in post-war German cinema.

As director of the Austria-Illinois Exchange Program, Professor Murray teaches courses on modern German literature, the history of German culture, and European integration. In 2004 colleagues and he from EU and US universities received US Department of Education FIPSE and EUC Directorate General for Education and Culture funding to initiate the Good Governance Consortium.  In 2007 he also received an Opportunity Grant from the UIUC Academy for Entrepreneurial Leadership to encourage environmental entrepreneurship among study abroad participants.
