Medieval Renaissance Music Concert: Saturday, January 24; 7:30 p.m.; The Episcopal Chapel of St. John the Divine (1011 S. Wright Street, Champaign). Hailed by critics as “A first-rate early music ensemble”, the Gravitacion Early Music Ensemble presents a concert of sublime, virtuosic music from the 12th to 17th centuries. The performance features founding members Sherezade Panthaki (soprano), Daniel Carberg (tenor) and Matthew Leese (baritone) with guest counter-tenor Jay Carter, and includes music by Hildegard von Bingen, Josquin and Byrd. $15 ($5 students). Professor Mara R. Wade has edited Emblematica 16 (2008), the second volume of select papers from the international conference of the Society of Emblem Studies at the University of Illinois ( 490 pp., 177 ill.). She would like to thank Kathleen Smith, her editorial assistant for this project, for her professionalism and skills in seeing this project through publication.


Professor Anna Westerstahl Stenport presented two papers at the Modern Language Association Conference in San Francisco. The first, "The Congo and Transnational Colonialism in Strindberg's Modernist Prose," was part of a Special Session panel on The International Strindberg, which she organized. The second paper, co-written with Cecilia Alm (Cornell University), "Entrepreneurship and Corporate Identities in Scandinavian Crime Fiction: Examples of a Globalizing Trend," was part of a program arranged by the Division on European Literary Relations. Professor Stenport also presided as Acting Chair of the program arranged by the Discussion Group on Scandinavian Languages and Literatures.


Congratualations to Professor Yasemin Yildiz, who has been awarded a British Council research fellowship for her project "Governing European Subjects: 'Muslim Women' and the Production of Europeanness in Contemporary Germany." The award will take her to Leeds University in Spring 2009, where she will be hosted by Prof. Stuart Taberner.
