As part of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures' Deutsches Seminar lecture series, Kathleen Smith will present on "Women as Book Collectors in the European Context: J. C. Gottsched’s 'Verzeichnis einer teuschen Frauenzimmerbibliothec' (Catalog of a German Woman’s Library) (1725)" at 5: 15PM on Thursday, March 12th, in 2090 FLB. Refreshments will follow.

The Departmental Awards Ceremony and Delta Phi Alpha Induction will take place on Tuesday, March 17th at 5 pm in Lucy Ellis Lounge. Professor Frederick Schwink will give a presentation on "The Bowdlerization of Snorri's Edda" and there will be a short reception to follow.

Presentations

Professor Laurie Johnson gave an invited paper entitled "Romanticism as Melancholy Realism: Schelling's Meditations on the Spirit World" at the Midwest Symposium in German Studies at the University of Missouri, March 6-7, 2009.

Professor Carl Niekerk gave an invited paper entitled "The Idea of the Modern in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's 'This Earth of Mankind'" at the Midwest Symposium in German Studies at the University of Missouri, March 6-7, 2009.

Professor Mara R. Wade presented a scholarly paper, "From the Early Modern to the Post-Modern: Theoretical and Practical Aspects of Collecting and Collections of Emblematica," on March 5 at the invitation of the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures and Beinecke Library at Yale University. She also presented a rare books workshop, "Highlights of the Emblematica Collections from the Beinecke" and was the faculty respondent at the graduate student conference "Collections and Collecting."

Weekly Departmental Activities

The Deutsche Konversationsgruppe meets on Wednesdays from 1-3 at the Bread Company on Goodwin Avenue. Come by for a relaxed opportunity to practice German. All levels are welcome. Contact: schwink@illinois.edu

The Middle High German reading group is getting together Fridays from 1-2 in the departmental library to enjoy various gems of Middle High German literature or at least textual material. All are welcome, levity is assured.
