European Union Center Conference
The New Immigrant Europe: Languages and Borderlands Conference
March 11 - 12th 2010 1080 Foreign Languages Building, Lucy Ellis Lounge. Presented by the European Union Center, The School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics, and The Centre Pluridisciplinaire of the Department of French.
The conference focuses on language, literary voice and the social and cultural life around the new EU borderlands associated with immigrants and migration. The talks cast light on language and culture, themes that connect broader social policies with cultural life and national identity of countries within the European Union. Speakers include Andrew Asher, Leila Ennaili, Guus Extra, Zsuzsanna Fagyal, Wail Hassan, Doug Kibbee, Michele Koven, Jean-Philippe Mathy, Anthony Messina, Robert Pahre, Dorothee Schneider, Angele Smith, Yasemin Yildiz.

Presentations
Professor Anke Pinkert gave a talk entitled "How to Create Change Twenty Years after the Fall of the Wall: Film, Autobiography, Pedagogy," at the Department of Germanic Languages at UCLA on February 22nd.
WEEKLY DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES
This semester Swedish Coffee Hour meets on Monday at 3:30pm at the Espresso Royale coffee-shop on Goodwin and Oregon.
This semester, the Deutsche Konversationsgruppe will meet on Wednesdays from 1-3 PM in the cafe of the new Institute for Genomic Biology. The IGB is the first building east of the Morrow Plots, and the cafe is in the downstairs level on the west side of the building.
